Summer Coffee Break Series - Green Building Certifications:
RELi Follow Up with Doug Pierce
Green buildings are better for people, the environment, and the bottom line. They steward natural resources and lower our environmental impacts. Plus they are healthier places for building occupants, which is especially important as everyone has a heightened awareness of healthy spaces.
During construction, renovation, repurposing, demolition, or occupancy, buildings use energy, water, raw materials, generate waste, and emit emissions. This has prompted the creation of green building standards, certifications, and rating systems aimed at reducing the impact of buildings on the natural environment through more sustainable design principles.
In our Summer Coffee Break Series, we will explore a variety of different certifications every other Friday, 10:00 - 10:30 am starting May 28 through September 24, 2021. Join your Green Buildings Are Better community for a quick conversation on current green building certifications. See the full list of events below!
Douglas Pierce, AIA, LEED® Fellow, RELi AP, Global Resilient Design Director and Architect at Perkins+Will Minneapolis; Adjunct Professor in Practice, University of Minnesota, College of Design; Chair USGBC RELi National Steering Committee; Associate ASHRAE
Doug is defining a new integrative framework for sustainable design through development of the RELi Resiliency Action List and National Consensus Standard. RELi was launched in 2014 and adopted by the USGBC in 2017 as part of their family of standards. He is currently working on ground breaking projects like solving for Sea Level Rise in Miami Beach, Florida and defining the design needs of Net Zero Cities in Iowa, Rochester Minnesota and Asia.
A follow-up conversation to the evening program presentation about RELi. RELi is a rating system and leadership standard that takes a holistic approach to resilient design. It is used to assess and plan for all of the acute hazards that buildings and communities can face during unplanned events, prepare to mitigate against these hazards and design and construct buildings to maintain critical life-saving services in the event of extended loss of power, heating fuel or water.
