USGBC-Missouri Gateway March 8 Program
Evidence-Based Sustainable Design

This presentation delves into one of the latest trends in healthcare architecture; using research of the built environment to inform new designs and process improvements rather than depending only on intuitive design.  Evidence Based Design (EBD) has a broad potential scope of impact from which each organization and researcher selects what will be most beneficial to their goals.  Green building design, technologies, and processes are in constant development putting sustainability application in a state of permanent flux and experimentation.  Often, those new to sustainability will write off a sustainability concept if it doesn’t work perfectly on the first try.  EBD provides an intermediary step – rather than giving up on an idea, EBD uses an evolutionary process to collect and analyze data in such a way as to improve sustainability over time based on evidence.  By building on the body of existing research through EBD, design teams and building owners alike can positively move the sustainability movement forward.
