Exploring Current Advances and Innovation in Water Management and Quality
From region to region and around the world the issues surrounding water vary. Communities large and small within the Mississippi River Basin confront issues of water abundance and flooding while other parts of the U.S. face water scarcity and drought. Differing building types and locations require unique approaches to water use and wastewater management.
This full-day program will use case studies to highlight new advancements in strategies and innovative techniques to address water use, management, and quality in a variety of settings.
Keynote Pete A. Munoz of Biohabitats will present cutting edge design and engineering for Hassalo on Eighth, a large multi-use residential urban redevelopment project in Portland, Oregon that treats its wastewater for reuse onsite (60,000 gallons per day), redirecting it away from stressed city sewer infrastructure.
A large health care network will discuss the special requirements of hospitals including: health considerations, the necessity of water conservation in different geographic locations, and the network's environmentally sustainable energy and water benchmarking goals.
Water quality is a multifaceted discussion. While the water leaving a municipal water treatment facility may be excellent, the water coming out of a building's faucet within that water district may not be of excellent quality. What happened? Detailed conversations regarding new water quality testing and the dilemmas of why and how contaminants lodge in piping are also covered in the day's agenda.

Pete A. Munoz, Senior Engineer, Biohabitats
Pete is a licensed engineer and certified wastewater treatment plant operator. Pete has been lucky enough to work with some of the most influential green built projects in the United States to create inspirational infrastructure and assist reconnecting our communities with what makes them work. With degrees in Biosystems, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Pete has been asked to speak around the country on a variety of topics including green infrastructure, regenerative design, and climate change solutions. Pete is a partner in the Alliance for Regeneration and he teaches several water related courses at Yestermorrow Design/Build in Warren, Vermont.
