Summer Coffee Break Series - Green Building Certifications:
Living Building Challenge with Madeline Smith
This event has been POSTPONED to Friday, June 18, 2021
Green buildings are better for people, the environment, and the bottom line. They steward natural resources and lower our environmental impacts. Plus they are healthier places for building occupants, which is especially important as everyone has a heightened awareness of healthy spaces.
During construction, renovation, repurposing, demolition, or occupancy, buildings use energy, water, raw materials, generate waste, and emit emissions. This has prompted the creation of green building standards, certifications, and rating systems aimed at reducing the impact of buildings on the natural environment through more sustainable design principles.
In our Summer Coffee Break Series, we will explore a variety of different certifications every other Friday, 10:00 - 10:30 am starting May 28 through September 24, 2021. Join your Green Buildings Are Better community for a quick conversation on current green building certifications. See the full list of events below!
Madeline Smith, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, LFA, Fitwel Ambassador, Sustainable Development Manager, Clayco enterprise. Madeline works to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment. She focuses on third party certifications, innovative sustainable technologies, building energy analysis, and assists in internal corporate responsibility. Her most recent accomplishment at Clayco includes the LEED Gold certification of the Washington University School of Medicine/BJC Mid Campus Center where, “from design to commissioning, the whole team remained focused on bringing a facility to life that would have substantial impact not only on the health of the overall environment but also with its occupants.”
The Living Building Challenge is a philosophy, certification, and advocacy tool for projects to move beyond merely being less bad and to become truly regenerative. Living Buildings must demonstrate that they have achieved Net Positive Energy, Net Positive Water, and Net Positive Waste. As a result, Living Buildings generate more energy than they consume.
